Tsagaan sar

Mongolian winter experience, Mongolian New Year event, first sunrise viewing

Celebrate New Year's Eve and Lunar New Year in a Mongolian style with a nomadic family.
No need to worry about winter clothes. Mongolian Dale, shoes and hats are available for rental.
Ethnic groups around the world have their own special events and festivals. The festival celebrated by the nomads and Mongolians who live in the grasslands of Central Asia is Tsagaan sar (New Year).
For the first time in 1206, the history book states that Tsagaan sar (New Year) was celebrated in the fall as one of the official national events. After that, from 1267, it was decided to celebrate in spring instead of autumn by the order of the Yuan dynasty, Khubilai Khan. In the 20th century, the social environment of Mongolia banned celebrations and stipulated ordinances that only local nomads would celebrate, but since 1990 it has been celebrated nationwide again. Since Tsagaan sar (New Year) is a big festival to celebrate grandly, there is a special order.

We will start preparing for Tsagansar (New Year's) events, banquets, etc. from a month ago. It is considered good luck if you are well prepared, and bad luck for the whole year if something is missing. Therefore, think about auspiciousness and focus on preparatory work.

Clothes. Since it's the New Year, it is believed that everyone can spend the year cheerfully and by wearing new clothes. Food and drink. Preparation of food and drink will start around autumn. We will do our best to get everything you need. We will specially prepare meat for children who come to greet Tsagansar (New Year). It is strongly forbidden to make children expect and feel bad. The main food and drink is whole mutton, meat, or Buuz. Buuz makes an average of 300-500 pieces per house. Buuz has the convenience of being ready to serve to guests.

New Year's Eve treat. Mongolia also has Bitoon (New Year's Eve). On this day the moon disappears and becomes dark and closed. On this day, to end of everything you didn't make in time for the last year. For example, it is customary to repay debts and finish sewing. On New Year's Eve, the family and relatives gather, prepare lots of food, eats a lot, and plays with shagais (sheep ankle bones) late into the night. The prepared meals are closed foods such as Buuz, Dumplings, and Hoshur (fried pies). Hoshur (fried pies) has been thought to have driven away the bad things of the leaving year with smoke. Place ice on the door of the ger. This means getting rid of all the bad things and keeping them out of the house. It is also customary to light candles on New Year's Eve. Bitoon (New Year's Eve) events involve not only humans but also livestock and property. For example, it is strictly forbidden to hit livestock or kill animals on this day. It is also customary to put livestock other than horses in groups outside the house. In addition, it is forbidden to go to other people's homes on this day, and there is a saying that "good things will remain at home by spending time at home."

An event to respect God. It is important to wake up on New Year's Day before the sun rises. When the sun rises, we bring food and go up to the mountains and hills near or near our house and offer it to God. This means greeting "God" and "Sky" first.

Footprint event. After greeting God, we walk toward the “good direction of fortune-telling” in the new year and leave our destiny to God. It is believed that by doing a footprint event, the whole year will be successful.

Greeting. On New Year's Day, after the event of respecting God and the event of footprints, the whole family greets at home. Grandfather and grandmother sit in the back, and young people in turn greet with Hadaga (silk). However, the couple does not say hello. This is because the couple is considered to be alone, and greeting is considered an auspicious act. When you say greetings such as "How are you?", "How are you having a good New Year?", "How was your winter?", "How are you?", "Winter was good", "" Did all the livestock spend the winter safely? " After the greetings are over, we all eat and drink. Unlike other festivals, Tsagansar (New Year) does not sing. Discuss the past year, reflect on it, and talk about your goals for the new year.

Visit to Tsagansar

We will greet the homes , relatives and respected people during the New Year holidays. Everyone wears traditional clothes , rides a good horse, and everyone goes to say hello. It is customary to have dairy products, alcohol, and food in that order at the homes you visit. Also, it is forbidden to distinguish between acquaintances. As mentioned above, the traditional Mongolian festival, Tsagaan Sar (New Year), is a long-standing festival with unique customs and order.

Winter Mongolian Wrestling

Wrestling tournaments are only held in summer in Mongolia. Even in winter, a wrestling tournament is held every year at the Mongolian Wrestling Palace. As the next big event of the Naadam Festival, 256 wrestlers from 21 prefectures in Mongolia will participate in the New Year's event and wrestle in one day.
