Camel Trekking in the Gobi DesertYolyn Am, Bayanzag, Terelj 8 Days

8 Days / 7 Nights Tour MO-35

What Is the South Gobi? Those who don't know it tend to picture the Gobi Desert as a desolate desert like the Sahara without a single blade of grass, but the actual Mongolian Gobi comes in various types. "South Gobi" means in Mongolian land where sparse short grass grows; the image is a desolate desert without a single plant, but in fact it is only 25% of the national territory. Camel herding is the most commonly seen here. Many dinosaur fossils have also been excavated here, stirring a romance of the ancient past. The Moltsog Dunes, about 50 km north of the South Gobi airfield, offer scenery that is exactly the image Japanese people picture of the Gobi Desert.

Highlights and Information

The two-humped (Bactrian) camel is an important livestock animal and family member that is indispensable to the lives of nomads in the South Gobi region. Its gait seems leisurely and composed. Because you sit between the two humps it is stable, and it is outstandingly easy to ride. Swaying on the back of such a Bactrian camel, you cross the magnificent land of the South Gobi and the Moltsog Dunes, whose very beautiful wind ripples are said to move under the influence of the moon. A cook and nomads accompany you and make delicious Mongolian food in the Gobi Desert. Even camel beginners can feel safe.

Khongor Sand Dunes

The Gobi Desert spreads across southern Mongolia. Much of it is desert with pebbles and low shrubs, but about 200 km from South Gobi, large sand dunes suddenly appear. The dunes, which continue like mountains as far as you can see, are more than about 50 m high. At the foot of the dunes there is a rare landscape with grassland, grass and short trees growing, and small rivers flowing. You often see camels trekking with tourists. This course lets you enjoy the moving scenery of these dunes, said to be No. 1 in Mongolia. Of course you also stay in a ger from which you can see the dunes. Staying in great nature with no man-made objects as far as you can see makes you completely forget daily life. In slow-flowing time, stroll across the dunes on a camel, and at night look up at the starry sky, and you will truly feel embraced by Mongolian nature.

Yolyn Am

In the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountains there is a beautiful place called Yolyn Am. Yolyn Am means "Valley of the Eagles" in Mongolian. Indeed eagles fly above the valley, and you can understand the name. The valley is at a high altitude of 2,200 m, and snow remains here even in early summer. In midsummer the snow melts, but the valley without snow is cool and pleasant. On a hot summer day it is fun to walk on the ice in the valley. Wild sheep and goats, wolves, Gobi bears, vultures and wild asses also live here.

Bayanzag

A place known worldwide because dinosaur eggs and fossils were found here. This area became known to the world around the 1920s through the American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews. Andrews excavated several dinosaur fossils and eggs here, which are now said to be on display in America's largest museum. The area is also famous for many rare objects found that prove people have lived here for millions of years. If you look carefully, you might find a fragment of a dinosaur fossil.

Moltsog Dunes

The Moltsog Dunes, about 50 km north of the South Gobi airfield, let you see huge dunes in such a grassland desert. On these dunes you can see very beautiful wind ripples and experience walking on smooth sand that few people have stepped on. Besides walking, there are camels here, so strolling the desert while riding a camel is also fun. What lives in the Mongolian Gobi region is the two-humped camel. The humps are made of fat, and when fully stored each hump exceeds 50 kg. By converting this stored fat into energy, it is a wonderful animal that can keep moving for nearly 10 days without eating anything.
