On the way from Ulaanbaatar to Terelj National Park (70 km, about 1 hour by private car), you will see rocks and stones of interesting shapes. Detailed Guide to Terelj

A national park about 50 km northeast of Ulaanbaatar. As the resort closest to the city center and easy to reach, it attracts many visitors from Mongolia and abroad. Surrounded by mountains and forests, it offers strange rock formations, alpine plants and more. Crystal was mined until 1960, but this was stopped because of the rise in the groundwater level. It remains a popular tourist spot, with tourist camps appearing one after another. If you charter a car, you can make it a day trip from Ulaanbaatar.

Getting Around Terelj and Highlights

Turtle Stone (Мэлхий хад)

The landmark of Terelj, a huge granite boulder about 15 m high. The rock has been carved away by natural forces and its shape closely resembles a turtle. You can climb from behind to the spot that corresponds to the turtle's neck. An ovoo is placed at the top, and from there you can take in the grand view of Terelj. Around Turtle Rock, tourists gather to enjoy horse and camel riding. Nearby are gers selling souvenirs. You can also see an ovoo that is an object of worship for the people of the area.

Chinggis Khaan Statue Theme Park (Чингис хааны хөшөөт цогцолбор)

A theme park in a place associated with Chinggis Khaan called Tsonjin Boldog, near the Tuul River in Erdene soum, Tuv Province. On a circular base 12 m high and 30 m in diameter stands a 40 m-high equestrian statue of Chinggis Khaan. You can go up by elevator (for a fee) to the horse's head, and take in the grand view of the surroundings from the viewing windows. In the building beneath the base is displayed the world's largest Mongolian gutal (boot). There are also museums, restaurants and other facilities. You can also try on 13th-century traditional clothing. A huge equestrian statue you can recognize from far away.

Turtle Rock

Soon after entering Terelj National Park, a rock in the shape of a big turtle comes into view. The rock is a large granitic pegmatite of orthoclase. The big rock, about 15 m high, stands alone right at the foot of the mountain. You can climb up to around the base of the neck. You can enjoy a little adventure, such as going under the rock.It is a popular tourist attraction, with rocky mountains of rare shapes said to be miracles of nature, the 15 m high Turtle Rock and more. Not only local Mongolians but tourists from various countries around the world come to enjoy this scenery.

Aryabal Monastery

You can also taste scenery so wonderful you can't believe it is near a city. Here you can make a trip to the natural panorama Turtle Rock and Aryabal Monastery. A Tibetan Buddhist monastery surrounded by rocky mountains on small hills in great nature. The colorful main hall is on the mid-slope of a rocky mountain.
The approach to the main hall is steppe at first, then you cross a suspension bridge and finally climb stone steps. There are also prayer wheels used in Tibetan Buddhism, and it is still supported by deep faith.
