Highlights and Information

The colder it is outside, the warmer the ger and the family inside

1.5–2 hours by private car from central Ulaanbaatar to the snow-covered countryside. Enjoy a one-night homestay at the ger of nomads living on the grand steppe. In winter, when the herding work has calmed down, you can spend relaxed time with the family and thoroughly experience nomadic culture. A ger suited to steppe life is airtight, and if the stove is lit it can even feel hot. Inside the ger there is a family warmth that makes you want to say "I'm home". Once you have experienced a winter homestay, next time too you will surely "want to go back to Mongolia". There is no heavy snow like in Japan, but in the dead of winter temperatures can approach minus 30 degrees. Please prepare sufficient cold-weather gear.

Dog Sledding Experience

There are many dog sledding experiences around the world, but in winter Mongolia you can experience becoming the musher (driver) yourself and controlling the sled. Mongolia is the country nearest to Japan where you can experience dog sledding. If you proceed following the instructor (teacher)'s directions, you can glide exhilaratingly across the great snowfield with the dogs' light steps. Please try Mongolian winter and dog sledding at least once.

City Sightseeing

Gandan Monastery
To Gandan Monastery, founded in 838 by the fifth living Buddha, Javzandamba.
It is the center of Mongolian Buddhism, with a 20 m-high statue of Avalokiteshvara, over ten facilities with about 900 monks, and a Buddhist university.
Chinggis Khaan Square
Move to Chinggis Khaan Square in the center of town. This is the historic place where Mongolia, then under Chinese rule, first declared Mongolian independence in 1921. Today it is the liveliest place in Ulaanbaatar, where government ceremonies, parades, outdoor concerts and other events are held almost every day.
Zaisan Hill
To Zaisan Hill with a view of all of Ulaanbaatar.
A monument with an inscription and mosaic erected to commemorate friendship between Mongolia and the Soviet Union. Next to it are a large Buddha statue and a tank said to have taken part in World War II.
