Highlights and Information

Bayan-Ulgii Eagle Hunter Homestay, Kazakh Traditional Golden Eagle Hunting Culture 5 Days

The Kazakhs living in Bayan-Ulgii, the westernmost province of Mongolia, are famous for hunting with golden eagles. Normally hunting is done only in the dead of winter when the mountains are pure white with snow. In Japan, hunters who train birds of prey to catch game are generally called "takajo (falconers)". In the Arab world falcons are still popular as a noble sport. But falconry culture surviving in real life is rare even in the world. The Kazakhs living in the Altai Mountains are the heirs of that culture. Among them, Bayan-Ulgii Province in Mongolia has by far the most excellent eagle hunters actively working. Enduring the suppression of traditional culture under socialism and economic hardship from the market economy, they continue to protect the golden eagle falconry culture that is the pride of their people. Veteran eagle hunters of Sagsai soum, wrapped in traditional eagle hunter costume. They always appear at important events. Sagsai soum is about 30 km from the provincial capital Ulgii. It has comfortable lodging and is the easiest village in which to experience Kazakh culture.

Living Together While Protecting a Rare Animal

The golden eagle is a precious raptor listed as endangered and rare under CITES. The golden eagles kept by eagle hunters are registered with national approval. Because wild animals like hares that serve as prey have declined sharply, keeping golden eagles has also become difficult. So in 2002 the eagle hunters joined together and established the "Mongolian Golden Eagle Association", aimed at ecological surveys and protection of golden eagles and the protection and promotion of their traditional culture. Every year, together with ornithologists of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, they survey measurements of golden eagles, hunting conditions and habitats. Measuring an individual golden eagle with an eagle hunter. After measuring, a numbered leg ring is attached and a registration certificate is handed over. The golden eagle's life span is about 20 years. It is captured at around 1 year old and released back to nature at around 9 years, when it is capable of breeding and living independently.
