Burd is the gateway town for sightseeing in Karakorum, the old capital of the Mongol Empire. With grassland, dunes, small hills and streams, in summer a splendid meadow spreads out, making it a scenic spot true to the steppe. The sight of nomads driving many sheep, goats and horses may be exactly your image of the Mongolian steppe. This is also an area where many Naadam horse trainers live, and horses are well cared for, so riding is pleasant. The area is surrounded by dunes, and a short walk leads to rocky hills with fine views and wild goats, so you can enjoy a different kind of riding from steppe riding. The nomads of Burd have camels, so you can also try camel riding.![]()
Desert Resort "Bayan Gobi Tourist Camp"
Bayan Gobi Tourist Camp is in the beautiful Elsen Tasarkhai Desert at Burd, just under 270 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar along a paved road, a little under 4 hours by car. Located 80 km, about 1 hour by car, from Karakorum, Mongolia's ancient capital, it is an excellent location with easy access and dynamic natural scenery. For tourists short on time or budget, or worried about a harsh journey, this very popular tourist camp at Elsen Tasarkhai offers an easy desert experience: you stay in a ger, the nomads' portable home, and enjoy a Mongolian experience together with city-level service. There are no man-made objects around the tourist camp. For safety, lights are always on at the accommodation and toilets, but if you lie down on a dune a little way off you can enjoy a night sky where the stars seem to fall. Thanks to the grand 360-degree panorama of the horizon, you can enjoy every celestial show the Mongolian plains promise, dawn, sunrise, sunset and starry sky, 24 hours a day. If you reserve, you can also experience a grand campfire, a traditional Mongolian shaman ceremony, a traditional Mongolian song and dance show, a mini Naadam and more.
Activities
• A tourist facility for 150 guests with 40 gers in a beautiful valley of the Elsen Tasarkhai dunes.
• The restaurant is in the center of the tourist camp and serves all three meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mineral water and, depending on the place, beer, Mongolian liquor and airag are also sold. You can also enjoy Mongolian meat dishes such as khorkhog, buuz and khuushuur.
• The toilets are Western-style and kept clean. Showers are separate for men and women, with water heated by a boiler, and can be used at set times.
• A sand bath in smooth white sand and a nature spa using airag, noted for its skin-beautifying effects, are recommended summer services of this tourist camp.
• At the Burd tourist camp, so that you can enjoy camels and horse riding on the beautiful steppe in spring, summer and autumn, an instructor stays with you and teaches how to mount and dismount and how to control the horse.
